We are deeply concerned by the recent ferry tragedy on the Euphrates River in Deir ez-Zor, which resulted in fatalities and injuries and has renewed serious questions about public safety measures and emergency preparedness. We have also taken note of widely circulated reports regarding an incident at a police station in Damascus involving the alleged refusal to receive two suspects in a child abduction case. If confirmed, the incident warrants a transparent and independent investigation.
The primary responsibility of any state is not limited to political administration—it begins with protecting the lives and security of its citizens.
In light of these developments, we call for:
- An independent and transparent investigation into the Deir ez-Zor ferry accident, with the findings made public and accountability established where negligence is proven. Official reports stated that the ferry was carrying more than 35 passengers when it collided with a bridge on the Euphrates River, prompting ongoing rescue operations.
- A comprehensive review of river transport safety procedures and the regulation of ferry operations wherever safer alternatives are available.
- The establishment of properly equipped river rescue units in Deir ez-Zor, including rescue boats, trained emergency teams, and effective emergency response plans.
- An official clarification regarding the reported Damascus police station incident, along with an administrative and legal investigation should any misconduct or negligence be confirmed.
- Stronger transparency and accountability across public institutions to reinforce citizens’ confidence in the rule of law.
