The Syrian province of Hasakah has witnessed rapidly developing events following the establishment of what has been described as a “War Tent” by members of Arab tribes and clans, a move that has attracted significant local and media attention due to its social and political symbolism.
Within tribal traditions, such a tent carries a strong symbolic meaning. It is historically used to express collective positions on major issues and may represent a state of social or political mobilization rather than simply being a gathering place.
Organizers of the movement state that the establishment of the tent came in response to several demands related to the administration of Hasakah province. These include objections to the continued control of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) over large areas of the province, calls for a greater role for tribes in managing local affairs, and demands for the restoration of state institutions’ role in governing the region.
In recent days, the tent has witnessed increasing tribal participation, including support convoys arriving from Deir ez-Zor, particularly from members of the Al-Akidat tribe, considered one of Syria’s largest and most influential tribes. Reports have also indicated growing tribal reactions from other Syrian cities and provinces.
This expanding support reflects the depth of social and political tensions in the region. At the same time, it raises concerns that political and administrative disputes could develop into field-level confrontation, potentially affecting local stability and civilian security.
Observers believe that the coming period will depend on the ability of all parties to manage differences through political and social dialogue rather than escalation, ensuring the protection of civilians and preserving Syria’s social diversity.
The Hasakah issue is not limited to one party alone; it is connected to broader questions regarding local governance, the role of social communities, and the future relationship between residents, institutions, and authorities controlling the territory.
